Childers was born in Hartsville, South Carolina, and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1987, she graduated from Myers Park High School. Childers was a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She then graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a bachelor's degree. Childers started her professional career as a journalist and producer for WCNC-TV, Charlotte in the 1990s. On July 7, 2012, she was presented with the title of Miss Florida by Kristina Janolo, outgoing titleholder. She was an accomplished ballet dancer. Rutledge is a University of Florida graduate, where she majored in broadcast journalistic. She previously was an Zeta Tau Alpha chapter member. She currently works for ESPN. She was also an on-field reporter for Fox College Sports coverage at the NCPA's 2012 National Paintball Championship. In summer 2014, Rutledge joined ESPN as well as SEC Network.
